We know how essential stable funding is to sustaining programs that support LGBTQ Alaskans. Historically, LGBTQ organizations have worked with limited resources even as the demand for advocacy, services, and community support has continued to grow. Today, those long standing challenges are becoming even more pronounced. Still, our community remains hopeful, resilient, and committed to advocating for our rights and for LGBTQ people across Alaska.
A recent national report underscores the urgency of this moment. According to the findings, philanthropic funding for LGBTQ organizations dropped significantly in 2023, falling to just over $209 million nationwide. That represents a 19 percent decline from the previous year when adjusted for inflation, even as attacks on LGBTQ rights and wellbeing have accelerated.
The impact of this decline is not evenly distributed. Funding directed to transgender, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary communities fell by 24 percent, and support for Black LGBTQ organizations declined sharply as well. These reductions come at a time when many of these communities are facing the greatest need for legal support, health care access, and community safety.
The report highlights a sobering reality about how philanthropy is distributed. “For every $100 awarded by U.S. foundations, only 20 cents specifically supported LGBTQ communities.” Another key finding emphasizes the mismatch between need and investment, noting that “funding has not kept pace with the scale of political attacks facing LGBTQ people.”
Even in this challenging environment, there is reason for optimism. LGBTQ organizations are adapting by strengthening grassroots fundraising, building individual donor support, and leaning into the power of community. At Alaskans Together, we draw strength from that resilience. With continued advocacy, solidarity, and generosity, we will keep moving forward to protect dignity, equality, and opportunity for all LGBTQ Alaskans.
