Anchorage Won’t Discriminate Project

Anchorage Won't Discriminate LogoIn 2009, members of the Anchorage lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community along with several local assembly members decided to propose an amendment to the existing non-discrimination ordinance in Anchorage that would add protections to LGBT people in housing, employment, and public accommodations.

During this long process several members of Alaskans Together for Equality (ATE) began mobilizing the community to testify and show public support for Anchorage Ordinance (AO) 64 under a community based movement on Facebook called Anchorage Won’t Discrimination. Concurrently, ATE formally joined the Equality Works Coalition in early Spring of 2009 to help lead this effort. Fortunately, AO-64 successfully passed the Anchorage Assembly by a margin of 7-4 in favor only to be vetoed by Mayor Dan Sullivan.

Since the veto ATE has continued to organize in Anchorage through representation on the Equality Works coalition along with representation on the recently established campaign committee of One Anchorage. One Anchorage is the campaign committee that is collecting signatures to place a ballot measure that would add protections to LGBT people in housing, employment, and public accommodations into the existing ordinance.

In September, ATE formally adopted the Anchorage Won’t Discriminate Project as priority project for the organization to facilitate ongoing organizing for the passage of an inclusive non-discrimination law in Anchorage. We are excited to take on this role that will assist local activists, Equality Works, and the One Anchorage campaign in Anchorage.
