Marriage Equality

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) families deserve the same respect, recognition and protection as all other families. Family recognition and the many rights and protections it provides is essential to the well-being of our families. Same-sex couples, even those legally recognized by their states, are denied the 1,138 federal benefits available to or required of married opposite-sex couples. The denial of those benefits hurts our families.

Alaska

Alaska was one of the first states to pass a constitutional amendment that bans the recognition of same-sex marriage in our state.

What We Are Doing

In March of 2011, the ATE board voted to become a partner of the Freedom to Marry national campaign in support of marriage called “Why Marriage Matters.” It’s a public education campaign that will talke about our rights and tell the story of why gay and lesbians want get married – to share there love and commitment with the person they love. Stay tuned and visit our website as we begin rolling out this campaign in the coming months. To learn more about this campaign visit: www.whymarriagematters.org.
